Everyone wants to be courageous until courage is the only choice they have. We all love the idea of strength, resilience, and victory, but few of us realize that real courage is not born in moments of ease. It is built in struggle, in pain, and in the uncomfortable places where faith is all you have left.
When I look back on my life, I see that the moments that shaped me most were never the comfortable ones. They were the moments that broke me open, that forced me to grow, that made me depend on God more than myself.
That is what Courage in the Dark is about. It is a story of how God used my most difficult seasons to build in me the courage I would one day need to stand before the world with faith, strength, and peace.
Learning Strength the Hard Way
I grew up in the Democratic Republic of Congo, where life was not easy. My family did not have much, but we had faith. My father always told me that true strength comes from trusting God, not from how much you have or how powerful you look.
When my father passed away, everything changed. I felt like my world had collapsed. I was angry, lost, and confused. Nothing made sense. I asked God why He would take the one person who guided and protected me. At that moment, I did not understand that this pain would become the foundation for my purpose.
It was through that loss that I began to understand what courage really means. Courage is not pretending that you are not hurting. It is believing that the pain has a purpose.
“Pain does not destroy you. It develops you.”
When life takes something from you, it also gives you something else — perspective, strength, compassion. These are the invisible gifts of hardship.
Leaving Home to Find My Purpose
When I first came to America, I left behind everything familiar. I was fifteen, scared, and uncertain of what the future held. I did not speak English, and I often felt alone. I missed my family, my home, and the sense of belonging that I once had.
Those first years were difficult. Every day brought new challenges — learning the language, adjusting to a new culture, and trying to prove myself on the basketball court. There were moments when I wanted to give up, to pack my things and go back home.
But courage is not about feeling ready. It is about showing up even when you feel afraid. Every practice, every late-night prayer, and every moment of doubt became a test of faith.
I learned that courage grows in discomfort. It grows when you choose to keep moving even when the path feels impossible. I began to understand that God was not trying to make life hard for me. He was training me to depend on Him completely.
“You cannot pray for strength and expect comfort at the same time.”
God’s Purpose Behind Every Challenge
The truth is, the greatest lessons God teaches rarely come in peaceful times. They come through resistance. Just as muscles grow when they are stretched and tested, faith grows when life pushes you beyond what you thought you could handle.
There were days when I felt I had nothing left. My body was tired, my mind was heavy, and my spirit felt empty. But those were the moments when I began to experience God’s strength in a new way.
When everything else fades, faith remains. That is where courage begins — not in comfort, but in surrender.
Every hardship you face has a purpose. It may not make sense now, but one day you will look back and realize that what you thought was breaking you was actually building you.
“God does not waste pain. Every struggle plants a seed of strength.”
The Real Meaning of Courage
Courage is not about being fearless. It is about trusting God in your fear. It is the quiet confidence that even when you do not understand the journey, you know who is leading the way.
The comfort zone feels safe, but nothing grows there. Growth begins where comfort ends. That is where you find who you really are and who God has called you to become.
If you are walking through something uncomfortable right now, take heart. It is not the end of your story. It is the place where your courage is being built.
“Faith is not proven in the light. It is proven in the dark, where only trust can guide your steps.”
Courage is not a destination. It is a daily choice. Every time you choose to keep going when life feels heavy, you are becoming stronger than you were yesterday.
My journey has taught me that courage is built in the hidden places — in loss, in waiting, in the quiet battles that no one sees. The world celebrates the victories, but God celebrates the faith that got you there.
So do not run from the discomfort. Embrace it. Because in that uncomfortable place, God is doing His greatest work. And when you step out of it, you will realize that you were never walking alone.
“Courage isn’t built in comfort. It is born in the moments that test your faith and reveal your strength.”
